When Anderson \u201cLogic\u201d Whitehead gets a call from his sister that she\u2019s in a dangerous situation, he leaves his California home to head back to Texas for the first time since high school. He\u2019s a different man now, a well-known author and creator, as well as out and proud, so he\u2019s not about to let anyone intimidate him, whether his sister\u2019s stalker or an old nemesis from his bad old days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cowboy Jericho Yeager has his land, his kids, and a lot of conflicting emotions about his hometown. When his neighbor Bailey starts having trouble with what his daughter calls a \u201cbad man\u201d Jericho mounts up to help, but he doesn\u2019t find a stalker, he finds Logic, who used to be a skinny, pimply kid. Now Logic is everything Jericho could ever want, but he knows he can\u2019t just grasp the brass ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guys like Logic don\u2019t fall for men like Jericho, and relationships that begin under high stress never last. At least that\u2019s what Jericho tells himself. Logic is used to going after what he wants, so he\u2019s wiling to ask Jericho to give him a try, but even he\u2019s not sure he can get past all of their history with each other, and with their deep East Texas hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prologue<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, it wasn\u2019t the fists that hurt the worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anderson protected his head with one arm, grabbing at someone\u2019s — Quint Bellamy, maybe, the bastard liked shit kickers — legs and going in for a bite, even as he thrust out as hard as he could with his legs, praying that he made contact with one of the other assholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wasn\u2019t sure what he\u2019d done today — maybe he\u2019d been caught reading, maybe he\u2019d looked at the wrong guy the wrong way, maybe he\u2019d just shown up here in the gym after any teachers who would stop this shit had left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless, there were five rednecks kicking his ass, and not very many people seemed to give a shit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, he heard no protest save his own. Fuckers. All of them. People tended to disappear like smoke when someone was beating him up instead of chanting about fights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He got in a handful of blows, three good bites, and a kick that had to have hit someone\u2019s balls, because damn, the screaming. Then he heard Miss Garces, her voice snapping through the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll of you leave him alone right now! I will kick all y\u2019all\u2019s asses. You little punks want to graduate? I can assure that won\u2019t happen!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank God. The cavalry had arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He landed hard when the kid holding his shirt let go, but the assholes all scattered like roaches, running from the authority of a teacher. Anderson groaned, trying not to curl back up in a ball, even though he hurt all over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting like a pussy didn\u2019t do him any good. Not at all. He swallowed some blood and counted his teeth with his tongue. Nothing seemed shattered or missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome on, Anderson. Let\u2019s get you an ice pack. It\u2019ll help the bleeding.\u201d Miss Garces wasn\u2019t but a few years older than him, and sweet as pie. She tried to be all efficient and stoic, but she had to be upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThanks.\u201d He sounded like he was gargling salt water, which was what he would have to do later. \u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, sir. You don\u2019t apologize. You didn\u2019t do anything wrong.\u201d Her voice was fierce, but her hands were gentle as she helped him to his feet. \u201cCome with me. We\u2019ll fix it. Can you walk?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have no idea.\u201d Anderson swayed, bile rising up in his throat. He was gonna puke up a scene from the Shining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJesus. Honey, I think we should call the police and your parents. Maybe an ambulance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t. The guys will never let up if you call my parents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen we expel the little shits. This isn\u2019t normal. This is nasty.\u201d She looked up, glancing around a little wildly. \u201cJericho? Jericho, I see you over there. Come help me get Anderson in the office. Did you see this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLiar.\u201d He lifted his head, trying to see. \u201cYou run with them. You knew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo I don\u2019t. They ain\u2019t friends of mine.\u201d Jericho Yeager was\u2026 well, he was already the kind of cowboy the girls read about in romances. Lean. Stoic. Off to work on the family ranch as soon as school was out. He never once stood up for Anderson, though. Not once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust help me get him up so I can get him to the office!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Miss Garces\u2019 voice, Jericho jumped and trotted over, boots clicking on the gym floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, ma\u2019am.\u201d Jericho slung an arm around him, supporting most of his weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miss Garces muttered, all the way to the office, where Mrs. Maydel stared at him as if he\u2019d grown too heads. \u201cCall 911. I need an ambulance and the police. Also, get Anderson\u2019s mother on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, Momma was gonna cry and fuss so hard. Daddy would just ask whether he needed to kill someone. Maybe he would let his dad kill Frank Nedry. The asshole was the one who\u2019d started it all. Then again, Quint did have those pointy toes, and they\u2019d done the most damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He grabbed his phone from his backpack, flipped it open, and called his sister Bailey. She answered and before she could get out more than, \u2018hello\u2019, he said, \u201cGot my ass handed to me, Sister. Cops are coming. Ambulance. Help?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh my God. I\u2019m coming. You\u2019re still at school?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUh-huh.\u201d He started shaking, and he was terrified he was fixin\u2019 to break down and blubber. \u201cThey called the ambulance, Sister.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t afford that, Bubba. You tell them you won\u2019t go with them. Then they can\u2019t charge you. I\u2019ll take you to the hospital myself.\u201d She had to know all this from when Daddy\u2019d broken both his ankles in a drought crack. God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay. Okay, hurry. Please. Please. I cain\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m in the truck. Just hold on, Bubba. I\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The line went dead and he tried to do just that. Hold on. Breathe. He felt a little like he was underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey, he don\u2019t look so good.\u201d What was Jericho still doing here? \u201cHe\u2019s wheezing like he\u2019s got a broken rib.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSister says no ambulance. We can\u2019t afford it.\u201d Anderson coughed, blood on his tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHoney, you have to go to the hospital. Why can\u2019t we get your momma on the phone? She just won\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She probably couldn\u2019t. Denny\u2019s didn\u2019t allow personal calls. \u201cSister\u2019s coming.\u201d Bailey would fix it. She always did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, but–\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, now.\u201d The principal was there suddenly, leading everyone else away. Mr. Meeks was always so kind but firm. \u201cHe has family coming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please God. He thought he needed help. Soon. This wasn\u2019t like the other beat downs he\u2019d had. This might make the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t hear sirens, so he guessed that was good. Anderson floated, trying not to fall asleep. What if he had a concussion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBubba? Oh, my God. Bubba.\u201d Bailey was there, taking his hands. \u201cSomeone help get me in the truck. Now, goddamn it!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll help.\u201d Jericho again. Shit, was he ever going to go away? Did he have to see this humiliation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank you. Be gentle with him. He\u2019s fucked up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI c\u2019n\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShut up, Bubba.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He coughed, wet goo running down his chin. The blood was bubbling now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere.\u201d Jericho eased him into the truck. \u201cYou get them to come out and put him on a stretcher when you get there. That way they can start giving him some air.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will. Thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked up, the world streaked with red. \u201cI\u2019m going to California, and I\u2019m never ever coming back here. Ever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood luck on that, buddy.\u201d Jericho let him go and finally disappeared like a magician\u2019s bunny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got you, Bubba. Just keep your head above water.\u201d Bailey touched his arm before getting them moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLove you, Sister. I\u2019m going to show them all. I swear to God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know you are. I can\u2019t wait to see what all you do.\u201d She never condescended. She meant it. She was his number one fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to make you proud.\u201d He swore it. He was going to get out of here and make them all proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
