Chapter Two

Kendall closed his eyes and prayed that this interview was going to work out. He’d left his home, his ex, everything but his computer, his phone, and three changes of clothes that he had in a backpack. He’d been staying in a coffee shop for three days. He was exhausted, wrinkled, and bruised from the beating Paul had given him, and he was about seven seconds from falling apart.

The secretary who’d told him to sit cleared her throat, and he opened his eyes to look at her.

“They’ll see you now.” She nodded toward the imposing door behind her.

“Thank you.” Please don’t screw this up. Please don’t screw this up.

He pushed the door open, trying not to wince as it seemed to creak the entire way. Four sets of eyes stared at him as he came in. Two huge men in suits stood next to the big desk that dominated the room. Behind the desk sat an older woman with the sternest look he’d ever seen. Sitting on the side of the desk was the handsomest Alpha he’d ever seen.

“Hello.” Kendall forced himself not to cry. “I’m Kendall Ogletree. Pleased.”

“Come on in and sit, Kendall Ogletree.” The man pointed to a chair in front of the desk. “I’m Seamus Savoy. I’ll be conducting your interview today.”

“Yes, sir.”

“What on earth happen to your face, young man?” the woman behind the desk asked.

“I was in an accident.” I ran into my ex’s fist. Three times.

Mr. Savoy’s eyebrow went up, but he just said. “We’re very sorry to hear that. Why don’t you tell us about your qualifications?”

“I have an advanced degree in magical arts and education. I specialize in—” Hiding children from the government. “—defense.”

“You’ve worked as a private tutor before.” It didn’t sound like a question, but Mr. Savoy paused.

“I have.” That was, basically, all he did. He’d worked in a sanctioned school once, for about six weeks, before he’d liberated the young man who didn’t want to be there.

“So, you understand privacy.” Savoy went on at his nod. “And I presume that living on the premises would not be a problem. And the invitation to live here would be limited to only you.”

“That’s fine with me.” It would be a blessing. He didn’t doubt that Paul was hunting him.

“And you would disclose your whereabouts and your job to absolutely no one. Not a single person.”

Dude. He was running from the government, from an ex, and from his own homelessness. “We both know you’ve researched me. You sought me out. You know that’s not an issue.”

“It’s worth reiterating,” Savoy noted.

“The pupil in question is to be protected at all costs,” added the stern woman behind the desk. She leaned forward. “But yes, our research tells us that your qualifications and your personal beliefs make you the right person for the job.”

“I have never lost a pupil. I have had two that left for another planet, one that grew up and is married now, and one that lives happily undercover.”

Savoy looked at the woman, and she nodded. Then he turned back to Kendall. “We have a nondisclosure agreement for you to sign, and then I’d like to bring your pupil in. If she doesn’t approve, we’ll give you ten thousand for your trouble and end our association. If you’re a good fit, salary will be two hundred thousand a year, and lodging here in the building.”

“That is adequate.” His heart was beating so hard he could barely breathe, but he managed. Two hundred thousand. He could hide for decades on that. Longer.

“Wonderful.” Savoy handed him a folder. “This is the NDA. Read it; let me know if you have any questions. If you don’t, sign it and we’ll bring in your pupil.”

“Yes, sir.” He read it, using his own magic to devour the NDA, which was reasonable for the situation and the salary, and honestly? He needed this job.

He signed it and handed it back over.

Savoy pulled out his phone. “We’re set, W. Bring her to my office.”

“Are you sure?” asked the disembodied voice from the phone.

The lady behind the desk replied immediately. “Do it, son. He’s good.”

“On our way.”

It took no time at all before another Alpha came into the room with a pretty omega, a beautiful little girl between them, holding their hands. Her magic hit him immediately—she absolutely glowed with it.

Her head tilted, and he smiled at her. Hello, young lady. I’m Kendall.

Kendall? She sent back, and he nodded.

That’s right. Kendall. I want to be your teacher.

Kendall! She ran to him, hugging him tight. You can hear me!

Oh, poor lonely girl… I can! I can hear you, loud and clear.

Savoy chuckled. “Well, that settles the question of whether or not she likes you.”

“I’ve only ever seen her do that with W,” the pretty omega said.

She turned and faced the omega, signing furiously. He can hear me! He can hear me!

The omega’s mouth dropped open and he signed back, That’s wonderful! Then he held out his hand to Kendall. “I’m Sebastian. It’s good to meet you.”

“Kendall. Pleased. Seriously.” He shook hands, and his smile was tickled, but his mind was filled with Brynn’s chatter. She had so much to say, and he chuckled, shifting her into his other arm. “And you are her W and she loves you so much. You gave her two grammas and a…a shuncle?”

Savoy chuckled. “That would be me. Uncle Seamus. You can call me Shay—everyone else does.”

“I’m W—Warrington Vol. Welcome to the clan.”

“Kendall Ogletree. Please.”

What happened to your face? Brynn asked.

I got into a fight. I lost. It was sad.

She put her hand on his cheek and closed her eyes, the healing magic affecting him immediately.

Oh, sweetheart. He hugged her, rocking her for a second. That was so kind.
